Have a Say in Protecting Drinking Water in Your Community

Newmarket – The South Georgian Bay Lake Simcoe (SGBLS) Source Protection Committee is a group of citizens representing general public, municipal, business and other interest groups from across the Lakes Simcoe and Couchiching, Black-River, Nottawasaga, and Severn Sound Source Protection Areas. The committee is charged with creating Assessment Reports which identify the location and nature of potential risks to sources of municipal drinking water in the South Georgian Bay Lake Simcoe Source Protection Region.

The Assessment Reports:
1.identify the vulnerable areas near wells and intakes
2.identify the types and number of threats to water quality near wells and intakes
3.examine the amount of water available

The Draft Proposed Assessment Reports are now complete and available for public review and comment until October 8, 2010. Copies of the reports can be viewed at www.ourwatershed.ca or at the Lake Simcoe Conservation Authority, Nottawasaga Valley Conservation Authority or Severn Sound Environmental Association offices during regular business hours. You can also request a digital copy of the reports by sending an email to: swp@ourwatershed.ca.

The deadline for comments is October 8, 2010 at 4:30 p.m. (comments received are subject to the Municipal Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act).

Five public meetings are being held to give residents the opportunity to review the Draft Proposed Assessment Reports and get more information. The meetings are scheduled as follows:

Tues, Sept 28, 4 – 8pm, Glenway Golf and Country Club, Newmarket
Thurs, Sept 30, 4 – 8pm, ODAS Park, Orillia
Tues, Oct 5, 4 – 8pm, Nottawasaga Inn, Alliston
Wed, Oct 6, 4 – 8pm, Lions Gate Banquet Centre, Barrie
