Another Chance to Have a Say in Protecting Drinking Water in Your Community

Friday, October 22, 2010

Newmarket, ON – Another chance is available to have your say on a report produced by the South Georgian Bay Lake Simcoe Source Protection Committee. The science-based Proposed Assessment Report will be used by the committee to develop a plan by 2012 to further protect local municipal drinking water sources.

The report is now posted for public review. The 30 day public comment period ends on November 22. This is the second comment period for the report. In September the public were invited to view the draft version of the report, attend one of five public meetings and provide comments. A number of written comments were received. At the October meeting of the Source Protection Committee, updates to the document were approved.

The Proposed Assessment Report examines the state of groundwater wells and surface water intakes in communities across the South Georgian Bay Lake Simcoe Source Protection Region. It describes the amount and quality of the source water. It shows the vulnerable areas around each municipal drinking water system where spills, pollution and overuse could harm the water source. Threats to drinking water in each of the vulnerable areas are assessed.

Written comments are invited until Monday, November 22, 2010 at 4:30 pm. Comments may be sent to: Lynn Dollin, Chair, South Georgian Bay Lake Simcoe Source Protection Committee, c/o Lake Simcoe Region Conservation Authority, 120 Bayview Parkway, Newmarket Ontario L3Y 4X1.

A summary of comments received will be included with the report when it is submitted to the Ministry of the Environment in December. The initiative to protect sources of municipal drinking water is directed and funded by the Ontario Ministry of the Environment. Similar source water protection projects are being undertaken in other regions across the province.
